Lower East Side Walking Tour

Lower East Side Walking Tour

The rich and multilayered history of the Lower East Side spans more than 100 years, having welcomed troves of immigrants decade after decade, from Eastern European Jews to Latin Americans. Today, culinary tourists are also flocking to the area, looking for gelato, dill pickles, chocolates, and other treats that are at times a throw back, at times an immediate whip forward. The Essex Street Market became home to push-cart vendors in 1940, during the La Guardia administration. It features several dozens of merchants, who offer products such as meats, fish, cheeses, and gourmet foods. Richard Ruben will take you on a tour of the market and will tell you all about its history, as you taste and shop. The class meets at 10 AM in front of the Essex Street Market (on the north east corner of Essex and Delancey streets).
